The project brings together archival research, oral histories, and site visits to tell a fuller, more inclusive story of the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">The Historical Survey consists of three project components: 1) the New Hope Community Historical Narrative; 2) the New Hope Trailhead including an informational sign, and 3) this webpage dedicated to the New Hope Community on the Blueprint website that can be modified as new information is uncovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Today, the New Hope Community is located in the general area of Testerina Primitive Baptist Church, 5520 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308. New Hope was established during the Reconstruction Era (1865\u20131877) by formerly enslaved people who became sharecroppers and tenant farmers. New Hope was not a legally incorporated town but was a settlement defined by shared labor, worship, education, and family ties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Three places serve as important pillars of the community: Testerina Primitive Baptist Church, Tuskeena Negro School, and the New Hope Cemetery. Testerina Primitive Baptist Church, founded in 1871, was a place where people gathered to worship and fellowship with each other. Tuskeena Negro School provided a formal education to the children of New Hope and other neighboring communities until its closing in 1951. The New Hope Cemetery was a burial place for community members from New Hope Plantation and surrounding plantations until its closure in 1948. An informational sign is in development and will be installed at the New Hope Trailhead. The sign will inform trail users and people about the New Hope Community and will be installed before the end of 2026.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12584&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; module_animation=&#8221;transition.fadeIn&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;40px&#8221;][vc_separator color=&#8221;black&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Preservation of the New Hope Cemetery&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1789524546138{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row gap=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">The New Hope Cemetery was documented in the Cultural Resource Assessment Survey (CRAS) conducted as part of the Project Development and Environmental (PD&amp;E) Study for the Northeast Gateway: Welaunee Boulevard project in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Additional research and fieldwork, including cadaver dog surveys to identify potential burial locations, were conducted in 2020 and 2021 by the Bureau of Archaeological Research of the Florida Department of State\u2019s Division of Historical Resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Based on these findings, the Florida Department of State\u2019s Division of Historical Resources recommended preserving and protecting the New Hope Cemetery (LE6465). The workshops were held at the Eastside Branch Library in August and September 2025 with Juanita <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gaston<\/span> from the Tallahassee African American Genealogical Society (TAAGS) leading the workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">During these sessions, participants were introduced to genealogy, learned how to begin researching their family history, and received worksheets and resource guides to assist with their research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Genealogical research can be conducted both onsite and online through archives and repositories at the local, state, and national level. Resources include <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-underline text-strikethrough-none\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" draggable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida Memory<\/a><\/span><\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> from the State Archives of Florida and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-underline text-strikethrough-none\" style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" draggable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US National Archives<\/a><\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">. These resources provide direct evidence of an event or person. Secondary resources interpret, analyze, or provide context for primary sources.
